V-Moda Remix Remote broken earbud fix
I've had this pair of V-Moda Remix Remote's
for 8 months which is the longest surviving headset I've had so far. (on the second place is the V-Moda Vibe Duo on which I replaced the cable about 5 times, followed by 4 pairs of Koss Porta Pro that never lasted longer than 3 months)
I was at work, just reaching for the headphones to plug myself into a bit of trance and then the horrible thing happened, only one earbud was playing.
3 hours later — email to V-Moda support — not covered under warranty — want my music back.
I love these headphones so I decided to attempt a fix. A bit of fiddling around and I could hear crackles when I moved the cable around the top of the click mic.Action
Don't do this if you're under warranty and only if you know your stuff! Send it back to V-Moda if you can.
After some Googling around I didn't find any info on how to dismanthe the click mic capsule. So (after poking holes in my finger and making lots of scratches to the aluminum capsule) using 2 sets of pliers, the top part of the capsule was unscrewed. Yay!
This is one cramped click mic assembly!
Slide the pcb out of the aluminum shell.

Internal button/mic assembly. Looks like they've managed to built in some noise cancelling, thats impressive.
Watch out for superglue and don't damage the pcb when taking it apart.
Make sure to remember the connections and polarity for left and right earbuds, time to snap them off!
The cause of the problem turned out to be the little metal clamp which was done up too tight and ended up shorting out one earbud.
Its a bit evil, but if its not there it would be worse, so keep hold of it.
The super-tough kevlar reinforced cable, also the outer rubber shell is not as tough.
Solder everything as it was and don't forget the metal clamp, it helps stop the cable from being ripped out! Below is the fixed setup ready to be assembled. Test it first!
Screw the top back on and you are done!
